Abstract

Post-processing and recruitment classification pipeline for the KRICO project (Antarctic Krill Connectivity). Classifies particles from a 32-year Lagrangian particle tracking hindcast (1994–2025) of Antarctic krill larval dispersal across CCAMLR Statistical Areas 48 and 88 into eight outcome states: recruitment success, censored, and mortality filters M1 (ice at spawning), M4 (calyptopis starvation under sea ice), M5a (under-development at sea-ice advance), M5b (off-shelf at sea-ice advance), M6 (no winter sea-ice advance within tracking window), and domain exit. M1 is evaluated at the spawning date, 24 days before release, and read from the GLORYS12v1 sea-ice field at the release position, so the pipeline requires the sea-ice forcing (KRICO_GLORYS12) in addition to the trajectories. This has been the case since v2.0.0. v1.0.0 evaluated M1 at the release date, which puts M1 5.19 percentage points lower domain-wide; output from v1.0.0 must not be combined with output from any v2 version. v2 output files carry m1_spawning_offset_days, m1_spawning_date and m1_sic_source as global attributes; v1.0.0 files carry none. Changed in v2.0.1. Documentation and terminology only; output is identical to v2.0.0. "Calyptope" is corrected to "calyptopis" throughout, which renames two identifiers: development.calyptope_window_end becomes calyptopis_window_end, and the calyptope_end_day parameter of filters.evaluate_M4 becomes calyptopis_end_day. Code calling the old names must be updated. An unmaintained smoke test is removed. Full release notes on GitHub. Developed in support of Gourgue et al. (2026), "Sea-ice retreat and advance govern the January spawning optimum and regional asymmetries in Antarctic krill recruitment."
