Cosmic Ray Transport in the Multiphase ISM
Abstract
The interstellar medium (ISM) is a complex and multiphase environment governed by a myriad of interconnected processes. Amongst these, an emergent and exciting avenue of study is the impact of cosmic rays (CRs) on driving galactic outflows and regulating star formation. I will present our work investigating the transport of GeV cosmic rays across a diverse range of galactic environments, utilizing TIGRESS MHD and CRMHD simulations of the star-forming ISM. Amongst our findings are that dynamical transport mechanisms (streaming at the ion Alfvén speed and advection with gas motion) are almost solely responsible for GeV CR transport in the extraplanar regions of galaxies, while diffusion along the magnetic field dominates within the primarily neutral ISM of galactic disks. I will discuss the predictive possibilities and consequences of our findings, as well as the exciting future avenues opened by our new CRMHD simulation suite. In addition to CRs, I will also discuss some of my broader work on the impact of plasma physics on star formation, including the impact of non-ideal MHD effects on prestellar core formation.
