Abstract

Vanilla is a symbol of the identity of the Totonac people of Veracruz. This region is considered the center of origin for its cultivation, a little-known biocultural element of Mexico. The empirical knowledge behind its use dates back to pre-Hispanic times. However, it was only in the late 18th century that these practices became part of agroforestry systems known to the Totonac people as traditional vanilla plantations. Over time, this knowledge has been lost. We believe it is necessary to reassess the local wisdom still preserved in the memories of some families involved in the traditional vanilla cultivation system, as it possesses qualities that could help restore the biocultural landscape and, consequently, mitigate the effects of the socio-environmental crisis at both local and regional levels.
