Abstract

This report describes the case of a 13-month-old boy presenting with fever, pain and functional limitation of the right elbow. Initial findings suggested septic arthritis and led to empirical antibiotic treatment. Subsequent diagnostic evaluation, which included haemoglobin electrophoresis, showed sickle cell disease (HbS 61%). Therefore, the differential diagnosis between infectious complications (osteomyelitis/septic arthritis) and bone marrow infarction due to vaso-occlusive crises resulted complex. The case emphasises the clinical challenge of managing osteoarticular symptoms in paediatric patients with sickle cell disease and the need for a high index of suspicion based on their countries of origin.
