Abstract

Academia has become permeated by metrics – but as they have become increasingly used, they have also become increasingly criticized. To understand this complicated relationship that academia has with its metrics, this chapter will first describe how various bibliometric tools have developed and how during this development the tasks of maintaining overviews and of making assessment and selection have been inextricably intertwined. Next, it will review some of the major challenges using bibliometrics for evaluative purposes, and it will close by describing how the tools can have a more positive use as providing prompts for further analysis of scholars, scholarly profiles, trajectories and scope.
