PEDIATRIC HUMERUS PROXIMAL METAPHYSIS AND PHYSIS INJURIES
Abstract
Pediatric proximal humerus fractures occur following a fall onto the affected shoulder or arm. Radio-graphs are usually used to diagnose. Understanding the anatomy of the proximal humerus is critical to appropriately manage these injuries, aiding in reduction and predicting the potential for remodeling. There is considerable controversy regarding the management of proximal humerus fractures in the pediatric population. Treatment is based on the patient’s age, fracture displacement and remodeling capacity. Nonsurgical treatment is successful in younger patients or in less displaced fractures. On the other hand, surgical treatment is often considered in older patients with more displaced fractures.
