PEDIATRIC METACARPAL FRACTURES
Abstract
Pediatric metacarpal fractures are a significant component of hand trauma in childhood. Due to differ-ences in children’s bone structure, fracture formation and healing processes differ from those in adults. These fractures can occur across a broad spectrum, ranging from low-energy falls to high-energy trau-ma. Diagnosis involves physical examination, radiographic assessment, and, in some cases, advanced imaging techniques. Treatment is determined based on fracture type, displacement degree, and patient age. Management options include closed reduction, percutaneous fixation, and surgical intervention. Fractures involving the growth plate require close follow-up due to the risk of deformity and growth disturbances. Complications include malunion, nonunion, growth abnormalities, and joint stiffness. Early intervention, proper classification, and a multidisciplinary rehabilitation approach are essential for preserving long-term hand function.
