COMPLICATIONS AFTER PEDIATRIC UPPER EXTREMITY FRACTURES
Abstract
Pediatric upper extremity fractures are common injuries that typically heal well due to the remarkable regenerative capacity of children. However, complications can arise during or after treatment, requir-ing careful monitoring and management. These complications include acute issues like neurovascular injuries and compartment syndrome, subacute problems such as malunion and nonunion, and long-term effects like growth disturbances, joint stiffness, and chronic pain or reflex sympathetic dystro-phy (RSD). Timely diagnosis, appropriate immobilization techniques, and effective rehabilitation are critical to optimizing outcomes. By understanding these potential risks and implementing proactive measures, healthcare providers can ensure better recovery and minimize long-term consequences for young patients.
