BASIC AND PRACTICAL ANATOMY FOR ONCOPLASTIC BREAST SURGERY
Abstract
Oncoplastic breast surgery synergizes oncologic resection principles with aesthetic reconstructive techniques to optimize both cancer control and cosmetic outcomes. Surgical techniques include thera-peutic mammoplasty, contralateral breast symmetry, skin/nipple-areola complex (NAC) sparing mas-tectomy, and immediate reconstruction using implants or autologous tissue. This review elucidates the anatomical structures critical to oncoplastic breast surgery and emphasizes their preservation to mini-mize complications. In order to achieve optimal results in reconstruction, some anatomical structures are critical for us. These are the anatomical structures that the breast surgeon should know especially. Quality and tightness of skin flaps, preservation of the inframammarian fold, blood suply of the NAC, integrity of the pectoral muscle, quality of the anterior abdominal wall and latissimus flaps are vitally important in oncoplastic surgery. Additionally, reconstructive techniques and their anatomical rele-vance are discussed. Complications such as NAC necrosis, wound breakdown, and sensory loss are often due to poor anatomical understanding. A solid grasp of breast anatomy enhances both surgical outcomes and patient quality of life after oncoplastic surgery.
