Post-Traumatic Isolated Extraocular Muscle Laceration: Report of Two Cases
Abstract
To present the surgical outcomes of 2 patients with traumatic isolated extraocular muscle lacerations. In this retrospective study, 2 patients who were diagnosed with post-traumatic lacerated extraocular muscle using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) underwent early surgical repair. 67-year-old man presented with vertical double vision after being struck by a piece of wire. The MRI revealed laceration of the right inferior rectus muscle near the junction of its anterior and middle thirds. 50-year-old man presented with horizontal double vision after being injured by an iron hook. The MRI revealed laceration of the right medial rectus muscle approximately 10 mm from its insertion site. Both muscle ends were brought together during surgery. After surgery, 2 patients had complete resolution of extraocular muscle function limitation and diplopia. Prompt and appropriate surgical repair saved the patients from permanent diplopia.
