Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to explore the experiences of audiologists during the counseling and fitting of hearing aids for the geriatric population. The research focused on identifying key factors influencing hearing aid selection, addressing patient expectations, and overcoming challenges in practice. Material and Methods: A qualitative research design was used, employing semi-structured interviews to gather detailed insights from 20 audiologists (14 female, 6 male) working in İstanbul (Türkiye) participants ranged in age from 23 to 52 years (mean±standard deviation=28.4±7.37) and had at least 6 months of professional experience. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews lasting 30 to 45 minutes and analyzed using descriptive and content analysis methods to uncover themes related to the audiologists' experiences. Results: The analysis revealed that hearing aid selection was influenced by factors such as audiological data, physical capabilities, and neurological status. Patient expectations and complaints were centered on issues like cost, aesthetic preferences, and unrealistic assumptions about hearing aid performance. Challenges related to amplification included difficulties with earmold fitting, ensuring compatibility between hearing aids and specific types of hearing loss, and communication barriers with elderly patients. Conclusion: The study highlights that hearing aid fitting for the elderly requires a personalized and multidimensional approach. These findings emphasize the need for patient-centered practices and offer guidance for audiologists' proffesional development and training.
