Pharmcognostical Standardization, Antioxidant, and in Vivo Dermal Toxicity Studies of Polyherbal Extract
Abstract
Standardizing herbal formulations is essential to ensure the safety, effectiveness, and consistency of herbal medicines, particularly for managing chronic illnesses. The present study evaluated a polyherbal formulation rich in polyphenols and flavonoids for its antioxidant activities and dermal safety. The polyherbal formulation (HAPHE) contained Mimusops elengi (Bakul), Psidium guajava (Guava), and Aegle marmelos (Bael). The polyphenol and flavonoid content was estimated, and antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH radical scavenging and H₂O₂ scavenging assays. Acute (14 days) and subacute (28 days) dermal toxicity studies were conducted in rats to evaluate in vivo safety. The formulation exhibited significant antioxidant activity and showed no toxic effects on body weight, organ weight, hematological parameters, or histopathological findings. These results confirm its safety and therapeutic potential in conditions associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. The polyherbal formulation demonstrated strong antioxidant activity and was safe for dermal application, supporting its potential use in future therapeutic applications.
