ABD Örneği Üzerinden Araştırma Ekosisteminde Tek Sağlık Yaklaşımı ve Tek Sağlık Bağlamında Bilim Diplomasisi
Abstract
The One Health approach emphasizes that human, animal, and environmental health should be considered as an integrated whole. The rise in zoonotic diseases, the threat of antimicrobial resistance, and the impacts of climate change on the environment have made this approach increasingly important. In Türkiye, the early activities of the Refik Saydam Hygiene Institute represent one of the first institutional examples that took into account the human-animal- environment relationship. Although modern science has led to significant specialization and separation among disciplines, zoonotic and vector-borne infections such as Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, Sandfly Fever, West Nile Virus infections, Avian Influenza, Q Fever, Brucellosis, and Lyme disease have made interdisciplinary collaboration, early warning systems, and coordinated public policies essential today. At the international level, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are key institutions for the One Health approach. One Health initiatives are also among the priority areas in funding programs and calls from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH–Fogarty International Center), and the World Bank. Science diplomacy is a vital tool for embedding the One Health approach into field practices at the international level. In the United States, Science Diplomacy Summits- where diplomats, academics, and researchers come together - serve as important platforms for communication and trust-building. In this context, the efforts of high-potential institutions such as TÜBİTAK and TÜSEB in Türkiye, along with the engagement of policy-making bodies in this area, are of strategic importance for strengthening national capacity and enhancing participation at the international level. One Health is not only a health approach but also an important topic for science diplomacy, provides a holistic framework for sustainable development, environmental balance, and global security.
