Suyun Yeniden Kullanımı ve Tarımda Gri Su Uygulamaları
Abstract
Due to factors such as rapid industrialization, uncontrolled consumption, and climate change, the implementation of effective and urgent solutions for the utilization of water resources and their sustainable management is becoming increasingly important. The agricultural sector is a major water-consuming sector, making the evaluation of alternative water sources particularly significant. To protect water resources, in addition to water reuse, the use of greywater in agriculture has emerged as one of the most effective solutions for achieving water savings. Greywater is a subcategory of domestic wastewater and generally originates from sources such as baths, showers, hand basins, washing machines, dishwashers, and kitchen sinks. It typically contains lower levels of organic matter and pathogens but higher concentrations of detergents, oils, and soap residues. This represents a less polluted type of wastewater. Due to the pollutants it contains, direct use of greywater is not suitable; to prevent adverse effects on soil structure and to avoid threats to plant, animal, and human health, controlled irrigation methods must be determined, appropriate treatment technologies should be evaluated and applied, and application outcomes should be regularly monitored. According to the literature, different treatment methods—such as biological treatment, filtration and disinfection, and membrane processes—are employed depending on the required water quality and intended use (e.g., irrigation, soil improvement, and landscape irrigation). The primary objectives are the protection of water resources (water savings), reduction of environmental impacts, provision of economic benefits, and ensuring energy efficiency of the process. In conclusion, although the use of greywater in agriculture offers numerous advantages, it requires the development of appropriate strategies, establishment of national standards supported by legal regulations, dissemination of pilot projects, and provision of necessary training by local authorities to guide public awareness.
