Abstract

Bioplastics are increasingly promoted as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics in various sectors, including agriculture. This study examines the effects of soil amendments with bioplastics derived from potato starch, commercial starch, and chitosan on pea plant growth. Experimental data show variable effects on stem and leaf length depending on bioplastic type, with some formulations enhancing and others suppressing growth. Interpreted in light of recent global research, findings highlight both opportunity and caution: bioplastics may benefit plant growth but can also disrupt soil ecosystems if not properly optimized. Further long-term, field-level investigations are needed to ensure bioplastics deliver sustainable benefits without unforeseen negative impacts.
