Abstract

This article presents a concise overview of the Biomaterials Chemistry Research Group at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Wrocław, highlighting four synergistic research pillars: (i) cage-like organosilicon hybrids (POSS, IC-POSS and DDSQ) as precision-engineered building blocks for bioactive materials; (ii) sustainable polymers and coordination chemistry of biometals, including zinc-based ROP catalysts, a chiral-sorting “zebra reaction”, and a bifunctional system that couples polymerization with depolymerization to enable circular PLA processing; (iii) molecular magnetism in Zn–Ln coordination compounds exhibiting single-molecule/ion magnet (SMM/SIM) behavior; and (iv) soil organic matter (SOM), with emphasis on humin heterogeneity, its interactions with pesticides, and soil-management routes that enrich stable carbon pools. Across these areas, we map structure–property–function relationships that control mechanics, drug solubilization and release, antimicrobial performance, magnetic anisotropy and relaxation dynamics, as well as spectroscopic signatures of SOM fractions. Representative outcomes include DDSQ–PVA two-component composites cytocompatible with human fibroblasts; TMSPMA-POSS macroporous scaffolds showing nearly fully reversible mechanical deformation; asymmetric IC-POSS networks that keep clotrimazole molecularly dispersed and enhance anti-Candida biofilm activity; Zn–Ln architectures with field-induced SMM behavior; and multi-site field trials identifying practices that increase durable SOM and carbon sequestration. Together, these results outline a coherent, application-oriented program where hybrid materials, catalysis, magnetism, and environmental analytics converge to address biomedical and sustainability challenges.
