Abstract

Introduction: The use of technology as a way to optimize the clinical screening of blood donors has been increasingly used in the world, such as in the United States that already uses the mixed screening model. Methods: In this sense, the present work aimed to analyze comparatively the time spent for evaluation and its conclusion as to the suitability of the blood donor between the screening by a human sizer and by a software created for this purpose. The research was an observational and cross-sectional study, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, which involved 210 participants over 18 years of age. Each participant underwent clinical screening and then answered a digital questionnaire developed to analyze the suitability of blood donation candidates. Results: The traditional screening had an average time of 2 minutes and 49 seconds, while the automated method with the software had an average of 1 minute and 19 seconds, being more efficient in 70.47% of the times. Regarding the results of fitness, there was congruence in 57.14% of cases, while incongruities occurred in 27.13%. In cases of disagreement, the software identified inaptitude factors such as inadequate feeding and low levels of hemoglobin.Discussion: The addition of technologies such as software directed to clinical screening positively benefits the donor and in general to increase the safety of donated blood, since it favors the donor greater speed in the process and privacy perception, contributing to the pronouncement of risk behavioral habits, as well as health education, by recognizing the criteria used. Conclusion: Thus, the adoption of the software favored an environment of greater privacy and confidentiality, which reflected in more frank responses to risk behaviors, such as use of illicit substances or unsafe sexual practices.
