Abstract

This study focused on determining the relationship between the use of social media and the level of attention deficit disorder symptomatology in people from 18 to 35 years of age. The design was quantitative and cross-sectional, using a multiple linear regression. Data was collected during May to July 2025 in Costa Rica, with a total of 156 participants in the sample, which were selected by convenience and snowball sampling (post-hoc statistical power was performed). Two instruments were used: the ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD-RS) to measure symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity, and an adapted version of Facebook Uses and Gratifications Scale, to measure social media use. Results suggest that the mode of use for entertainment has a significant effect attention difficulty, whereas time of use was not significant in the model. It is suggested that social media’s effects on inattention are more related to the finality and mode of use, than with its duration.
