Abstract

This study examines color perception across different age groups within the Costa Rican cultural context, using a mixed-methods approach and a non-experimental observational design. The qualitative phase involved focus groups segmented by age (20–59 years), during which participants reacted to 11 colors to explore associated emotions and meanings. In the quantitative phase, a questionnaire was administered to 102 participants aged 18 to 80. Findings reveal generational and cultural differences in color perception: for example, red evoked anger among younger participants but symbolized love for older individuals, while blue was preferred by older adults and associated with calmness. Some colors, like green and blue, showed consistent associations (nature and tranquility), whereas orange and yellow varied significantly between age groups. The results highlight how color perception is shaped by age, gender, and cultural context, with implications for design, education, and marketing. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of further research to explore how these perceptions evolve across generations.
