Influencia del Género en la Identificación del Autismo: Implicaciones del Diagnóstico Tardío en Mujeres
Abstract
This article examines the influence of gender bias in the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Costa Rican women diagnosed in adulthood. A qualitative approach was used, including semi-structured interviews with eleven women and a survey administered to nine health professionals experienced in ASD evaluation. The research project was conducted in Costa Rica in 2025. Thematic analysis identified key categories such as the impact of late diagnosis, masking, gender stereotypes, and barriers within the public health system (CCSS). Participant profiles were coded to support comparative analysis. Findings reveal that current diagnostic tools and criteria are limited in capturing the female presentation of ASD, which leads to significant emotional and social consequences. The study concludes that there is an urgent need for more inclusive and gender-sensitive diagnostic practices.
