Abstract

Introduction: This article presents a unique case of COVID-19 in a 5-year and 8-month-old child, characterized by atypical gastrointestinal symptoms, specifically rectal bleeding, intermittent fever, and abdominal pain. The case underscores the importance of considering COVID-19 in the differential diagnosis of pediatric patients, particularly in the context of the current pandemic. Case Report: The patient, a 5-year and 8-month-old boy, presented with rectal bleeding, intermittent fever, and abdominal pain. Despite the absence of respiratory difficulty, the confirmation of COVID-19 led to the exclusion of other potential causes of rectal bleeding, such as anal fissures and haemorrhoids. Discussion: The case highlights the significance of vigilance for atypical COVID-19 presentations in pediatric patients and emphasizes the need for a comprehensive diagnostic approach that accounts for the full spectrum of potential symptoms, including those related to the gastrointestinal tract. The exclusion of other potential causes of rectal bleeding following the confirmation of COVID-19 supports the conclusion that the patient's gastrointestinal symptoms were likely attributable to the viral infection. Conclusion: This case underscores the importance of considering gastrointestinal symptoms in the differential diagnosis of pediatric patients with COVID-19. It also emphasizes the need for ongoing research to further elucidate the diverse clinical presentations of COVID-19 in the pediatric population.
