Abstract

Objective: To clarify the main conceptual changes that have emerged in vocational guidance since the second half of the last century and the first decades of the 21st century – a period marked by the shift from vocational guidance to career development. Methodology: A literature review was conducted on the concepts of vocation, calling, career, and career development, drawing on theoretical contributions from various internationally recognized authors in the field of career guidance. This included both those who established the initial ideas and those who transformed and updated them to align with the changes of the modern world. In addition, contributions from the researchers regarding the Costa Rican context were incorporated. Results: The four concepts that emerged with the discipline and subsequently evolved are examined in depth. These modifications represent a profound conceptual transformation that has also influenced practical interventions. From an epistemological standpoint, this change has implications for professional practice. Conclusions: In Costa Rica, there is a clear need for institutions offering vocational services, guidance counseling training programs, and practicing professionals to clarify the meaning they assign to each concept and the underlying theoretical assumptions. Furthermore, a deep understanding of the Costa Rican context and conditions is required.
