Abstract

Peri-implantitis affects approximately 10% of the total implants placed and can lead to implant failure if left untreated.Implant failure can also result from inadequate initial osseointegration. The goal of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with dental implant failure.Three hundred and eighty-one implants placed by the same practitioner in 118 individuals were evaluated. The risk factors studied included age, sex, self-reported overall health issues (e.g., cardiovascular risks, diseases, and diabetes), smoking, history of periodontitis, size and shape of the dental implant, and type of restorative treatment performed. No cases with a history of periodontitis were treated with dental implants. The frequency of dental implant failures varied from 4% to 9%.The 14 implants placed by the practitioner for more than two decades (at the beginning of incorporating dental implants into their practice) did not fail, whereas failures were observed in cases with less than 20 years of follow-up, which coincided with treating cases that smoked, had diabetes, or had cardiovascular risk factors. On the other hand, the frequency of the need to revisit dental implants was similar to that reported in the literature and during the lifetime of the practitioner's activities.Hence, the individual susceptibility to peri-implantitis plays an important role in the occurrence of the condition. No obvious risk factor was identified that necessitated revision of a dental implant due to peri-implantitis.(
