Geopolitical tensions rhyme with food dependency in the MENA region
Abstract
Since the 1970s, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has been heavily dependent on cereal imports. Egypt, Algeria and Libya are among the main wheat-importing nations. This dependence has been accompanied by commercial rivalry between exporting countries to capture the markets in this zone. The Russian Federation has been a major player on the Egyptian market since 2013. The current geopolitical tensions not only confirm this degree of dependence, but are also upsetting the hierarchy of cereal exporting nations. A major geopolitics of cereals is taking hold in the global agricultural landscape.
