Abstract

The confessional structure and its spatial organization as a factor of socio-economic development of the Penza region. The research focuses on the mosaic analysis of the religious landscape of the region, shaped by historical, ethnocultural and migration processes. A comprehensive analysis of the modern confessional structure of the Penza region, the identification of historical stages of its formation and patterns of spatial distribution of the main religious groups to understand their role in the sustainable development of the region. The study is based on a statistical analysis of the data from the Register of Non-Profit Organizations of the Penza Region Office of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation with the classification of religious associations. Cartographic methods (GIS technologies) based on data from the 2020 All-Russian Population Census, supplemented by historical and cultural analysis, were used to determine the geography of the settlement of believers. It was found that the religious landscape of the region is characterized by a high degree of mosaic with the dominance of Orthodoxy (41.7% of organizations) and a significant proportion of Islam (29.8%). Clear spatial patterns have been identified: Orthodoxy is concentrated in urban agglomerations, Islam – in the historical areas of compact residence of the Misharian Tatars (Gorodishchensky, Kuznetsky districts), and less numerous denominations (Catholicism, Lutheranism, the Armenian Apostolic Church) have a pronounced urban character. It is shown that the historically developed multi-confessionalism is a consequence of the border situation of the region, government policy and migration. The unique religious mosaic of the Penza region, formed as a result of a long historical development, represents a resource for its sustainable development. The absence of religious conflicts and traditions of interfaith dialogue are the key to social stability. Consideration of the identified confessional features and their spatial distribution is necessary for the development of effective strategies for regional governance and socio-economic policy aimed at strengthening interethnic and interreligious harmony.
