Abstract

The proliferation of non-linear loads has posed significant challenges to power quality, particularly concerning issues like voltage sags, and harmonic distortion. The Series Active Power Filter (SAPF) has emerged as an effective solution to address these problems. This paper proposes an intelligent control strategy, designated as NSMC, for the SAPF, based on the integration of Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The efficacy of the proposed NSMC controller is verified through simulations in MATLAB & Simulink, and its performance is benchmarked against the conventional Proportional-Integral (PI) controller and the standard SMC under severe grid conditions, including voltage sags and harmonic distortion. The results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits superior performance in terms of harmonic filtering capability and dynamic response.
