Abstract

Background: Acute nasopharyngitis, commonly referred to as common cold, is a leading cause of morbidity and outpatient visits worldwide.Individualized Homoeopathic treatment based on patient-specific causative factors is widely practiced for such acute upper respiratory conditions.Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of individualized Homoeopathic treatment based on causative factors in acute nasopharyngitis using WURSS-21 scoring. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted among 100 patients presenting with acute nasopharyngitis at SKHMC Rural Health Centre.WURSS-21 score was recorded at baseline and after treatment.Remedies were prescribed based on individualized totality and identified causative factors. Results: Significant reduction in mean WURSS-21 score was observed after treatment (p value based on paired t-test ).Most common causative factors identified were exposure to cold air, cold weather, and rain exposure Major remedies prescribed included Bryonia Alba, Nux vomica,Pulsatilla , Rhus Tox in individualized potency based on susceptibility. Conclusion: Individualized Homoeopathic treatment based on causative factors was associated with reduction in severity of acute nasopharyngitis symptoms measured using WURSS-21.
