Eco-Awareness as a Catalyst for Environmentally Responsible Consumption: A Comprehensive Review of Consumer Behaviour Insights
Abstract
Environmental degradation resulting from unsustainable consumption has become a critical global issue, placing strong emphasis on the need to understand consumer behaviour in promoting sustainability. This review article explores the role of eco-awareness as a catalyst for environmentally responsible consumption by synthesizing existing literature on green consumer behaviour.Through a comprehensive review of academic studies, this paper examines how environmental knowledge, psychological factors, social influence, and economic constraints shape consumers' decisions towards eco-friendly products. The findings indicate that higher levels of eco-awareness significantly enhance positive environmental attitudes and purchase intentions, although practical barriers such as price sensitivity, product availability, and trust in green claims often limit actual behavioural change. The review also highlights the persistent attitude-behaviour gap and underscores the importance of integrating education, policy support, and corporate transparency to encourage sustainable consumption. This study contributes to a deeper theoretical and practical understanding of how eco-awareness can be strengthened to promote long-term environmentally responsible consumer practices.
