Abstract

This report documents the first phase of a multi-phase research initiative aimed at supporting the evaluation and selection of optical imaging technologies for methane emissions detection, localization, and quantification (DLQ). The project team conducted a targeted literature review and industry survey to identify current performance gaps and operator needs, which informed the development of a flexible, field-ready testing and validation protocol. Grounded in a use-cycle framework, the protocol incorporates both technical performance metrics and end-user considerations such as operational integration, usability, and cost. To support implementation in Phase 2, the report outlines multiple test scenarios-including a representative compressor station use case at a controlled facility environment at SwRI's Metering Research Facility (MRF)-focused on fixed continuous monitoring systems (CMSs). The outcomes of this phase lay the foundation for rigorous field testing and the development of a practical guidance document that will help operators and stakeholders make informed decisions about optical DLQ technologies.
