Paper 1 - The Enforceability of Distinction
Abstract
The Standard Model's 26 free parameters, three gauge groups, and three generations are inserted by hand. This paper proposes that all such structure is forced by a single constraint: maintaining any physical distinctionspin-up versus spin-down, here versus there, proton versus neutroncosts a share of a nite endowment. We formalize this as Axiom A1: enforcement capacity is nite and positive. From A1 alonesupplemented by two denitional sub-clauses (Multiplicity, Non-Degeneracy), both subsequently derived from the framework's eld contentwe prove four structural lemmas: L ε * (Minimum Cost), L loc (Locality), L nc (Non-Closure), and L irr (Irreversibility). An operational postulate L ∆ (Competition), derived from A1 and a perturbation model, establishes the superadditivity separating quantum structure from classical overow.A bridge theorem shows that superadditivity forces order-dependent enforcementthe operational content of noncommutativityon an abstract state set without assuming Hilbertspace structure.Standard results (Gel'fandNa markSegal construction, Gleason's theorem, WedderburnArtin, SkolemNoether) whose hypotheses are veried in each case then yield Hilbert space, the Born rule, completely positive trace-preserving dynamics, tensor products, gauge symmetry, and von Neumann entropy as committed capacity. The framework is dimensionless: all predictions are pure numbers requiring one energy scale for unit conversion.Twenty-three theorems with constructive witnesses and executable code references are provided.Specic gauge groups, particle content, and the full set of zeroparameter predictions are derived in the companion papers.
