Mapping and Analysis of Educational Resources Indicators for Economic Development in Southern Borno Region, Borno State
Abstract
This study focuses on mapping and analysis of education resources indicators for economic development in Borno South region. The main objectives of the study were: mapping and analysis of the spatial distribution patterns of educational resources, analysis of the spatial concentration patterns and the ranking of the resources among the Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the region. The study covers only nine of the twenty-seven LGAs in the state, while only public educational institutions were considered. The actual locations of each of the schools were captured by the use of GPS and linked with a generated digital map of the region to show the spatial distribution patterns of the schools in the region.Nearest Neighbour Analysis of Geostatistical technique in ArcGIS 10.8 was used for the analysis of the spatial patterns. The spatial concentration patters of the schools were calculated using Location Quotient formula. The ranking of the level of adequacy of the educational resources' indicators among the LGAs were analyzed using Z-Score formula and calculated in Microsoft Excel.Among the findings of the study were: there were more primary schools than the other levels of educational institutions in the region. The spatial distribution patterns of the three levels of educational institutions in the region were all clustered (because NA were less than 1) but that of Primary School was more clustered than the others, and also more clustered in the southern part of the region. The spatial distribution of educational resources in the region were skewed because the resources were not evenly distributed. Moreover, only five LGAs (Biu, Askira/Uba, Kwaya Kusar, Chibok and Hawul) were at advantaged in educational resources, while Shani, Bayo, Gwoza and Damboa LGAs were at disadvantaged. In the ranking, the first three LGAs with highest educational resources were Biu, Askira/Uba and Kwaya Kusar LGAs respectively, while the last three were Bayo, Gwoza and Damboa respectively. It was recommended that educational institutions in areas where they are currently insufficient especially, Gwoza and Damboa LGAs should be provided. Moreover, the four disadvantaged LGAs in educational resources should be more prioritized in subsequent allocation of educational resources in the region.
