Mini-Implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE): a literature review
Abstract
Transverse maxillary constriction is a condition often treated with conventional expanders or surgery, the latter typically required in adults due to the fusion of palatal sutures. With technological advancements, the Mini-Implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE) technique has emerged as a less invasive alternative to surgical procedures. This study reviewed the literature to analyze the advantages and limitations of MARPE in the treatment of maxillary constriction. Searches were conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, SciELO, and LILACS, covering publications from 2006 to 2019, using descriptors such as "crossbite," "maxillary expansion," and "mini-implants." A total of 42 articles were identified, and 20 were selected after applying specific filters. The results indicate that MARPE achieves predominantly skeletal expansion, with reduced risks of buccal tipping and periodontal impact, yielding stable outcomes. It is concluded that MARPE represents an effective and less invasive alternative to surgically assisted expansion in adults, provided rigorous hygiene practices are maintained to prevent complications.
