Photosynthetic characterization of rice and bean varieties from the Pantanal of Mato Grosso
Abstract
Considering that the genetic matrix of agronomic crops is relatively limited, all unknown plant material is a potential source of genetic resources. The objective of this work was to carry out a physiological characterization of two traditional varieties of rice and three varieties of beans from São Pedro de Joselândia, Pantanal, Mato Grosso. Through an experiment in pots arranged in a greenhouse under conditions similar to those of the Pantanal environment, photosynthetic efficiency, which may eventually present desirable characteristics in terms of tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress factors, was investigated. The analysis revealed remarkable photosynthetic capabilities, suggesting that these traditional varieties are important genetic reservoirs for breeding programs aimed at increasing crop yields and resilience.
