Abstract

This theoretical chapter critically examined the pervasive impact of emotional trauma on human posture, breathing patterns, and functional movement, positioning trauma-informed physiotherapy at the forefront of holistic rehabilitation. The primary aim had been to synthesize contemporary neurophysiological and clinical research that elucidated the mechanisms by which trauma shaped the musculoskeletal and autonomic systems. The purpose had been twofold: to equip physiotherapists with an in-depth understanding of trauma’s somatic manifestations, and to highlight evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches that integrated the mind-body paradigm into rehabilitation science. Drawing on over thirty empirical and theoretical studies, the chapter had explored how stress-induced sympathetic dominance, impaired vagal tone, and somatic dissociation contributed to muscle guarding, maladaptive postural strategies, and breathing dysfunction. Core themes had included the neurophysiological interplay between trauma and movement, evidence-based interventions such as trauma-sensitive yoga, myofascial release, somatic experiencing, body awareness therapies, and the imperative for physiotherapists to foster safety, trust, and patient empowerment as outlined in trauma-informed care frameworks. This chapter had advocated for a biopsychosocial-spiritual approach, recognizing the inseparable nature of mind and body in both pathology and healing, and had called for further research in interprofessional care, patient-centred assessment tools, and long-term outcome studies. As a theoretical contribution, it had offered a robust conceptual framework, examining the multifactorial relationship between emotional trauma and somatic dysfunction while underscoring future directions for research, clinical innovation, and professional education.
