Trust: The Foundation of Happy Relationship
Abstract
The establishment and maintenance of close relationships depend on trust because it creates emotional security, which enables partners to share vulnerability and work together. In this chapter, we will explore how trust lays the foundation of all relationships, whether romantic, family, social, or institutional, and various factors that impact the formation. We will discuss various theoretical frameworks like Erik Erikson’s Theory, Attachment theory, Social exchange theory, and multidimensional models which explain how trust is formed from infancy and how attachment styles, culture and personality traits influence trust-building process. This chapter further talks about how trust erosion occurs via betrayal, unfaithfulness, inconsistent behavior, lies, etc, and its impact on relationships. Further, we talk about reconstructive processes which help in restoration of trust which include therapeutic processes like trauma-informed care, CBT, ACT, mindfulness, and more. It also talks about resilience and factors that help in resilience building, which include internal factors like self-efficacy, self-esteem, optimism, grit, and external factors like supportive environment, sense of usefulness to society etc. In the end, we conclude by stating that trust is essential for forming strong relationships that lead to emotional closeness, open communication, commitment, and long-lasting partnerships.
