Abstract

Exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN) is a growing environmental pollutant with implications for maternal and neonatal health. This narrative literature review aims to identify and synthesise the existing evidence exploring the relationship between ALAN exposure during pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. Analysis of 12 quantitative studies revealed two distinct categories of adverse health outcomes: maternal and neonatal. The findings from this review underscore ALAN as a potentially modifiable risk factor for consideration when providing maternity care, with important implications for perinatal health, clinical guidelines and maternal workplace health and safety.
