Concept of Bandhytva (Infertility) in Ayurveda: Classical Perspectives and Therapeutic Approaches
Abstract
Bandhytva (infertility) is an important gynecological and reproductive disorder described extensively in Ayurveda. It is defined as the inability of a woman or couple to conceive despite regular, unprotected coitus. Ayurveda explains conception as a coordinated function of four essential factors—Ritu (fertile period), Kshetra (healthy reproductive organs), Ambu (adequate nourishment), and Beeja (healthy ovum and sperm). Derangement of any of these factors due to Dosha imbalance, particularly Vata Dosha, along with Dhatu Kshaya, Agnimandya, and psychological stress, leads to Bandhytva. Classical Ayurvedic texts classify Bandhytva into various types based on etiology, such as Vandhya, Apraja, Sapraja, and Kakavandhya. Therapeutic management in Ayurveda is holistic and includes Shodhana Chikitsa (bio-purification), Shamana Chikitsa (palliative therapy), Rasayana therapy, dietary regulation, lifestyle modification, and Satvavajaya Chikitsa (psychological counseling). Procedures like Basti, Uttara Basti, and use of Garbhaprasadaka and Beejaprasadana drugs play a significant role. Thus, Ayurveda offers a comprehensive, individualized, and root-cause-oriented approach to the management of infertility, emphasizing restoration of physiological balance and reproductive health.
