Abstract

The editors of A Gentleman of the Law rightly describe Tan Yock Lin as an outstanding scholar, one who has had an enduring influence upon the development of Singapore law.Indeed, the breadth of that influence can be seen in the pages of this book. Its contributors, themselves leading academics, canvass a wide variety of topics, ranging from equity to common law, from domestic to international law, from private law to the law of criminal evidence.Without exception, the essays repay close attention. They are a fitting tribute to Yock Lin's scholarship. At the same time, this book bears witness also to Yock Lin's wider academic life.As the Reminiscences attest, he was an advisor and mentor to many of our colleagues at NUS Law, especially those starting out on their careers.Yock Lin led by example: his service was always given cheerfully and without reservation. That same generosity of spirit could be seen in his teaching record. He taught pretty much everything, across evidence and procedure, conflicts, trust law, even constitutional law and comparative law. That he did so reflected, in part, the range of Yock Lin's intellectual interests.Yet it also manifested his willingness to give. For much of his career, NUS Law was a small Faculty needing to cover an array of different subjects.Across some 40 years, Yock Lin played a key role in helping to get the Law Faculty to where it is today. The editors and contributors deserve our thanks, and our congratulations, for producing a fine volume of essays and reminiscences. As well as celebrating Yock Lin's career as a legal scholar, A Gentleman of the Law honours his character as a human being.
