Decoding Consumer Uncertainty: Insights into Purchase Intentions Amid Evolving Market Dynamics
Abstract
Consumer uncertainty has become a pivotal factor influencing purchase intentions, particularly in wake of dynamic market conditions, technological advancements, and socio-political disruptions. While existing literature has extensively explored the interplay between uncertainty and consumer behavior, there remains a need to systematically structure and consolidate these findings. This study conducts a systematic literature review of 123 Scopus-indexed publications (2014–2024) to analyze the evolving role of consumer uncertainty in shaping purchasing decisions. Employing bibliometric analysis and an input-process-output model of consumer behavior, this research identifies macro-environmental (economic, technological, political, and socio-cultural), micro-environmental (social media influence, marketing strategies and trust mechanisms), and psychological drivers of consumer uncertainty. Findings indicate that uncertainty significantly alters consumer risk perceptions, leading to delays in purchase decisions, increased preference for trusted brands, and heightened reliance on online reviews. Furthermore, marketing strategies that emphasize transparency, trust-building, and digital transformation play a critical role in mitigating uncertainty and fostering positive purchase intentions. This study contributes to consumer behavior literature by offering a structured framework for understanding uncertainty’s impact on purchasing behaviors and proposes strategic implications for businesses navigating uncertain market landscapes. Future research directions include empirical validation of the proposed framework and further exploration of consumer responses in high-uncertainty environments.
