Digital Art Platforms, Youth Creativity, and Inclusive Development in Emerging Economies (Nigeria and Kenya)
Abstract
This study explored how digital art platforms influence youth creativity and inclusive development in two emerging African economies: Kenya and Nigeria. As digital ecosystems reshape creative production, understanding their developmental potential becomes critical.Employing a comparative case-study design, the research integrated platform analytics (12-month activity logs), an online survey of young digital artists (n=318), and focus group discussions with platform operators and cultural policy actors.Quantitative findings revealed that consistent participation in digital art platforms increases income-generating opportunities by an estimated 34-41% for young creators across both countries.Beyond financial gains, qualitative insights showed that these platforms act as incubators for cultural innovation, enabling youth to merge indigenous aesthetics with contemporary digital techniques for expanded local and global audiences.Participants also highlighted non-economic benefits, including skill enhancement, wider peer networks, and increased visibility for under-represented artistic styles.Despite these positives, constraints such as uneven digital infrastructure, algorithmic visibility biases, and weak policy support remain substantial barriers to equitable creative development. The study concluded that digital art ecosystems hold significant promise for democratizing creative expression and strengthening cultural sustainability in emerging economies. It recommended investment in digital infrastructure, fairer visibility mechanisms, and youth-centered cultural policies that recognize digital creativity as a legitimate development pathway.
