Media Freedom as a Guarantee for Political Participation in the Era of Digital Media
Abstract
This study investigates the role of new media as a communication channel influencing citizen political participation, using freedom of expression as an indicator. The paper is structured around three axes. The first axis defines new media as a technological mechanism and sociological phenomenon characterized by multimedia, hypertextual, global, interactive, immediate, and adaptive features. It examines how social networking sites enable users to produce content, exchange roles in communication, and form virtual communities, transcending traditional top-down models and nation-state boundaries. The second axis analyzes political culture as a determinant of political participation, exploring definitions from sociological and political science perspectives. It establishes political culture as the set of orientations, values, and beliefs shaping citizens' interpretations of government roles and their own rights and duties. The analysis links political participation to citizenship, democracy, and cultural variability across societies and individuals. The third axis investigates freedom of expression within new media outlets as an indicator of political participation, examining how digital convergence and hypermedia facilitate political mobilization. It discusses the reciprocal relationship between social networks and society, the emergence of virtual citizenship, and the transformation of public opinion formation. The study concludes that technological evolution has fundamentally reshaped societal patterns, making political processes more open and expanding opportunities for political expression and participation through networked media systems, while emphasizing that social networks prepare change requirements by forming awareness and contributing to political mobilization in contemporary Arab and global societies worldwide.
