Bacterial cellulose wound dressing immersed in electrolyzed water: A promising treatment for burn injuries
Abstract
Context: Burn injuries cause significant morbidity, requiring effective wound dressings that promote healing and prevent infection. Aims: To evaluate the dermal irritation potential, wound healing efficacy, and systemic toxicity of a novel bacterial cellulose membrane immersed in electrolyzed water (VBMEMBRANE). Methods: Dermal irritation was assessed in rabbits according to OECD guidelines. A thermal burn model in rats was treated with silver sulfadiazine or VBMEMBRANE for 21 days. Wound area, hydroxyproline content, histopathology, hematological, hepatic, and renal parameters were analyzed. Results: The results indicated that VBMEMBRANE did not cause skin irritation in rabbits after 72 h. In rats with thermal burns, daily application significantly reduced wound size after 14 and 21 days (p
