Designing for the Edge: Designing lightweight yet feature-rich Android applications
Abstract
This paper discusses the problem of designing feature rich Android applications that operate efficiently with the constraint of resources available on less powerful devices.Low-end smartphones and irregular connectivity in emerging markets continuously dominate, thus calling for a reassessment of mobile application design. It therefore discusses core principles and engineering practices in building minimal footprint applications with all their functionalities preserved. The strategies discussed here include code and resource shrinking, asset management discipline, modular delivery using Android App Bundles, and architectural approaches to functionality balanced by efficiency as grounded through case studies of large scale "lite" applications such as Facebook Lite, Instagram Lite, Uber Lite, and Spotify Lite which have made this practice achievable on a global scale improving user retention supporting digital inclusion4 thereby proving lightweight application design more as technical optimization but making access easy and fair a participation in the digital ecosystem is not a moral prerogative but strategic compulsion, too.
