Design And Development Of Sugarcane Loading Mechanism For Farm Trolley
Abstract
Manual sugarcane loading remains one of the most labour-intensive and time-consuming operations in Indian agriculture.Frequent labour shortages, rising wages, and high physical effort significantly affect the efficiency and cost of sugarcane handling. The present work focuses on the design and development of a mechanical sugarcane loading mechanism using a conveyor chain system powered by a 12W DC motor, aimed at reducing human effort, increasing productivity, and ensuring safer transportation.A conveyor-based lifting system was fabricated using sprockets, roller chain, shafts, pillow-block bearings, and a screw-jack support frame.Experimental analysis shows that the mechanism can lift a sugarcane load of 45 kg per cycle, with an estimated capacity of 0.5-1.5 tons per hour.Chain drive design calculations confirmed a required motor power of 12W, a torque of 4005 N-m, and a chain length of 2936.67 mm.The developed system proves effective for small and medium-scale farms, reducing manual strain, minimizing labour dependency, and enhancing loading speed. It provides a reliable, low-cost mechanization solution adaptable for sugarcane, firewood, and similar agricultural loads.
