Abstract

The pediatric respiratory system is characterized by smaller, narrower airways, a relatively larger tongue, a higher, more anterior larynx, and a more compliant (less rigid) rib cage compared to adults.Physiologically, these differences result in increased airway resistance, a higher metabolic rate leading to increased oxygen demand, and a reduced functional reserve.Research methodologies, including spirometry, oscillometry, and multiple breath washout, are adapted for varying pediatric cooperation levels.Modeling frequently utilizes resistor-capacitor (RC) models to simulate lung mechanics, especially during mechanical ventilation.Key clinical implications highlight the heightened risk of airway obstruction from minor swelling (e.g., in croup or bronchiolitis) and the clinical utility of developmental insights in treating common respiratory illnesses like RSV and asthma.
