Abstract

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has significantly changed the way young Indians make daily payments by enabling instant, easy, and mobile-based transactions.Over time, UPI has moved beyond being just a payment tool and has become a digital experience shaped by speed, interface design, and reward features. These elements increasingly influence how young users think, feel, and behave while spending money, often affecting their purchasing decisions.Despite the rapid growth of UPI usage, Indian academic literature has paid limited attention to its behavioural effects. There is a clear research gap in understanding how UPI's gamification features influence spending, how youth psychologically respond to instant payments, and how payment convenience interacts with emotional triggers to encourage impulsive buying.Addressing these gaps, this study proposes a conceptual model to guide future empirical research and deepen understanding of digital payment behaviour among Indian youth. The findings suggest that instant payments and reward-based features can reduce spending awareness and increase impulsive purchases.Based on these insights, fintech companies should adopt responsible app design by including spending alerts, limits, and clear payment confirmations.Marketing managers should use rewards carefully to avoid promoting unhealthy spending habits, while policymakers and educators should strengthen financial literacy and promote fair digital payment practices to encourage mindful spending among young users.
