Abstract

This research work x-rays how FACTS devices can reduce losses in power system.FACTS devices, also known as compensators, have many functions in power system raging from voltage modification, transient stability improvement, enhanced power transfer capability and power factor improvement which reduces line losses.Line losses in power system include both active and reactive power losses. This paper discuss the application of Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) and Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and their levels of active power (MW) and reactive power (MVar) losses reduction in electrical power system. The approach adopted in this work involves the modelling and simulation of a power network system in a PSAT and MATLAB environments, with and without the compensators installed. The comparative analysis of the loss reduction capacity of each of the TCSC and STATCOM is comprehensively presented in graphs, tables and percentages. The modelling of the TCSC is with a capacitor whose value changes with the thyristor's firing angle to modify the line reactance while that of the STATCOM modifies the line voltage. The TCSC is connected in series with the system to control the active power of the network while the STATCOM is connected in parallel with the line to control the reactive power of the system.
