Abstract

Agricultural mechanization is essential for enhancing productivity, profitability, and the livelihood of the farming community, particularly in India where agriculture employs a major share of the workforce and is dominated by small and marginal farmers.Onion (Allium cepa L.) is a widely cultivated vegetable crop, and its production relies heavily on labor-intensive practices, especially manual transplanting of seedlings.Although direct seeding offers a labor-saving alternative, challenges such as non-uniform plant spacing, the need for thinning, and the difficulty of precision sowing due to the small, light, and irregular shape of onion seeds limit its adoption. This review highlights the need for appropriate mechanization solutions tailored to smallholders, with emphasis on manually operated onion seed planters.Key design features, including seed metering mechanisms, adjustable row spacing, and lightweight construction, are discussed along with reported performance indicators such as field efficiency, field capacity, and cost of operation.Available studies indicate that manually operated onion seed planters can achieve satisfactory field performance, improved planting uniformity, and reduced labor and operational costs. The review concludes that such technologies hold significant potential for enhancing onion cultivation efficiency and supporting sustainable agriculture among small and marginal farmers.
