Abstract

Currently, 74% of medications are taken orally, and their effectiveness is found to be subpar.Transdermal drug delivery systems were developed to enhance such characters.Researchers have been drawn to the transdermal route of drug delivery because of its many biomedical benefits. But the biggest obstacle to successfully delivering drug molecules to the systemic circulation via this route is the excellent impervious nature of skin.Transdermal drug delivery, which is distinct from topical drug delivery, is the process of delivering a drug through the skin to produce a systemic effect. The process of creating transdermal drug delivery systems is a multidisciplinary endeavor that involves basic feasibility studies, which begin with the choice of a drug molecule and continue through the demonstration of adequate drug flux in an ex vivo and/or in vivo model. The creation of a drug delivery system must satisfy the manufacturer's requirements for scale-up and manufacturability, the patient's needs for comfort and cosmetic appeal, the drug molecule's requirements (physicochemical and stability factors), and, above all, the demands of the economy. An overview of TDDS, its benefits over traditional dosage forms, drug delivery pathways through human skin, penetration enhancers, different Transdermal Patch components, and types of Transdermal patches are given in this review article.
