Advancements in Thermal Management of IC Engines: A Review of Cylinder Block Materials and Fin Design Optimization
Abstract
Effective thermal management is fundamental to the operation of contemporary internal combustion engines (ICE), directly affecting fuel efficiency, emissions, and the durability of components. This study provides a thorough discussion of the technological improvements and research approaches utilized in the thermal analysis of engine cylinder blocks and heads. It delineates the progression of cooling methodologies, emphasizing the shift from conventional cast iron components to lightweight aluminum alloys and composite materials engineered to endure elevated thermal stresses. Moreover, the study rigorously assesses the transition from empirical testing to sophisticated numerical techniques, namely Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).This study synthesizes recent studies to elucidate how differences in fin geometry, spacing, and material qualities influence temperature distribution and heat transfer. The research delineates existing deficiencies in thermal optimization and formulates a theoretical framework for forthcoming comparative evaluations of innovative material applications in high-performance engines.
